A Little Primer to Restart
After a nearly 10 year hiatus, I’m heading back to the painting table. Starting out with some models from the GW Bloodbowl starter box I received from my son-in-law years ago. Nothing exciting really, just primer. In the past, I always used an automotive primer (Dupli-Color) or Rustolium’s 2X Ultra Cover. Both gave great, on coat coverage, a deep rich black, and they dried relatively quickly, usually under 10 minutes.
I’m starting this time with “mini paint manufacturers” version just as a test to see if I like them. I remember Citadel’s Chaos Black being ok, if a little thick and satin-like on the finish, but at 3x+ the cost of automotive primers, the choice was pretty easy.
Product: Army Painter Brand Colour Primer – Matt Black
Verdict: Meh. My usual application left the primer a bit on the grainy side. I don’t think this was a distance to model issue, as I’ve primed hundreds of minis an have a decent expectations for how sprays should present themselves on the model.
Using a little slower and closer pass did give better coverage, but I can already see some details getting overwhelmed. The finish was much smoother, but it took nearly an hour for it to dry thoroughly (not tacky to the touch), and the finish isn’t so much a matt as a slight satin.
Will I continue to use it? Sure, I’ll use up the can while I’m getting restarted. I’ll try some other brands and compare. I’m looking for an easily applied thin, and solid coverage. A rich, deep black, and something with just a touch of “tooth”.
Not sure when I’ll get the chance to actually start pushing paint as I’m still waiting on a few supplies before beginning. Thanks for swinging by!
Later!
