Random Notes – Red and Armor
Started the armor plating on the Bloodbowl ork piece. Starting back with what I knew, greens and reds (the predominant color in my previous ork army). Just random thoughts as I was painting:
I’m using a limited number of paints at the moment since buying back everything I had before “temporarily retiring” would be hideously expensive. As I reacquaint my self with specific color progressions, I realize i need to increase the depth of my red selections – mainly by darker reds. While I’m liking the Dragon and Pure Red mid-tones from Army Painter, the Basilisk Red, while looking darker in the bottle, comes out much more purple/pink when thinned and doesn’t give me the darker base red Mechrite Red I liked so much from Citadel. I still made do though.
I waffled about how to treat the open/cut/raw edges of the armor plating. Do I paint it all red? Do I paint the edges in a metal style to show they were cut raw from sheets of red steel? Do I do a little of both and just try things out to see what works best? I decided on the later. The smaller plates and the left shoulder guard will get the cute steel look, while leaving the other pieces an all around red. I’m going to try NMM for this model and not use any metallic paints, just to make things harder for myself.
If you really want to see your mistakes and where yo can improve on brush control? Take nice close up photo. This is not the first time I found errant brush marks after I thought I was done cleaning up the pervious layers. Note the last photo that has a nice red spot on the orks like from painting the iron gob. I’ll have to touch that up. 🙂 I also have to delineation lines to improve on such as between the wrist and bracers.
Up next: the edges of the armor plating in NMM steel.
Later!
